I have a lovely Snowman globe in my bedroom. I watch it every night because it has a fan that stirs up the sparkles and makes them look like little tiny dancers. Spenser does not appreciate my whimsy and it is driving him insane. I say this because roughly twice a week he tries to convince me to put it in the basement with the other Christmas decorations. He comes to me and signs Christmas is done, done again for extra measure. I explain I like my globe not just for Christmas. He once again explains to me Christmas is over. I can see he is frustrated with my apparent stupidity and not understanding that Christmas is done. Round and Round we go neither willing to concede. The other day I came home and headed to my bedroom. There might as well have been a spot light glaring on the empty place on my dresser where the snow globe used to sit. My snow globe had been kidnapped. Lucky for me I knew it was annoying only one person. I said, “Spenser please bring me my snow globe from the basement.” He was just around the corner and grudgingly brought back my globe. I smiled, turned it on and set it down.   Spenser  looked at it contemplated the situation and said, “off.” Oh my here we go.

The other day we stopped over at Big lots because Spenser likes their stick on tattoos. Steve hopped out and was half way to the store but Spenser was waiting at the front of the car for me. I had my cell phone in one spot and my billfold in another and was trying to gather them up to put in my purse. I was finally organized and got out to meet him at the front of the car so we could walk in together. It was on the tip of my tongue to thank him for waiting for me when I hear under his breath …. slow.

Spenser attends a day service and takes a sack lunch. It falls to Steve to make his lunch and lately Spenser has been following Steve around when he is trying to put his lunch together, he doesn’t say anything he just waits until his Dad has the lunch packed and is placed by the door. That is when he gets it and takes out whatever he doesn’t want and puts that item away.   Steve was getting a little frustrated with Spenser and told him to make it himself if he doesn’t like the selections. Guess what … Sunday Spenser’s lunch sack appear by the door and Steve asked me if I had packed a lunch, I told him no and said I thought he had. He said no. We peeked inside when Spenser wasn’t around and sure enough it was a lunch with two burritos and applesauce and a tea for a beverage! Amazing all we had to do was ask! Never would have guessed that. What a smart Guy.

What an extraordinary week so far.  It actually didn’t start off so well.  I had not been  feeling well which brings me to my first event.  I Left work early and at the bottom of our street I saw a van.  It took me a minute to realize it was the day service for Spenser.     I spoted him in the front seat waving madly at me and smiling.  He has never waived to me before, I was so touched and moved at this seemingly small act.  I will hold that memory with me always.  The next event was tonight.  A mother and daughter from our neighborhood were out walking and stop by our house with a box of chalk.  They said it was extra chalk from their church and the firsts person they thought of was Spenser.  How heart warming is that.  I find this so amazing that Spenser’s sidewalk chalk touches so many people, what a lovely and appreciated jester their thoughtfulness was for us.  Live is good!

  • 06-28-12 Target

Steve, Spenser and I were shopping at Target over the past weekend.  I had stopped to look at a bar stool that was marked as clearance.  This really got Spenser’s interest, looking equated to buying in his mind.  You could tell he was one big goose bump. Steve had just caught up to us and Spenser took him over to look at all the bar stools.  There was one that Steve was interested in but it wasn’t on the floor so he asked a clerk for help.  I came around the corner at just that time and Spenser held his had up to me palm out to indicate I should stop, which I did.  He then put his finger to his mouth, then his ear.  I get is now, I was being told to shut up and listen.  Unbelievable!  Obviously I had cost him a sale in the past and he didn’t want me to mess up this purchase.  We did not buy that bar stool.  It was not my fault!

I recently realized that Spenser is way more then his autism.  He also has maleism!  Yep, I was in the kitchen and the dog scratched the door wanting to be let back in.  Spenser was sitting in the rocker and  went out of this way to get my attention then said, “mom, dog.”  I said, “ really your legs are broken?”   Please go let the dog in!  He hesitated, gave me the darnest smile, got up and let the dog in.  He is just like his dad!  They both have a heavy dose of maleism!

We had a wonderful time at the Farmers Market today.  We did a few new things by adding framed co-loges of this chalk prints.  They were well received.  Spenser is becoming a real pro setting up the tent and chairs.  I am continually dazzled by him every day and want to thank everyone that stopped by to visit and appreciate his art.  He wasn’t as animated as he usually is “downtown” his term for the Farmers Market but then he felt we should leave and go to Hobby Lobby, image that!

My goodness time flies. I can’t believe how quickly the last few months have gone. Spenser and I have started hiking in the woods by the governors mansion. We have gotten lost twice which disturbs me more then him. Speners just thought I was in the mood to walk. I didn’t think we were ever going to find the right path! He has watch malard ducks on the ponds and collected what he calls fire wood. I am going to have to nip that in the bud though because he expects me to help him carry his firewood which are always pretty good size logs!

Spenser has an amazing way of communicating, not always readily apparent.  We were shopping at Sam’s and he wanted to buy peanut butter.  The man does not eat peanut butter so I was trying to discourage him.  Meeting my resistance he said for Dad.  I told him Dad does not need peanut butter.  I put the peanut butter back.  Steve and I had separate several isles back so when we hooked up again Spenser dragged him off and again tried to buy peanut butter?  When he said no Spenser started to signed spread on his balm.  I was totally baffled.  Spenser then clapped his hand and said mouse.  The light dawned.  I said “did you see a mouse in the garage today.”   He got very excited and said ” yes”.  I said “the peanut butter is for a mouse trap?”  You watch Dad set a trap with peanut butter on it.   Again I hear yes.   There you have it peanut butter, mouse, and Dad.  It all fit just took us a while to get there.  He needed the peanut butter to catch a mouse.  Wow glad we worked that one out.
